Submarine world in Croatia - Cavtat Diving & Amphoraes (Part I)
Cavtat is a small historical town placed 20km South-Eastern from Dubrovnik. With approximately 1500 inhabitants Cavtat is the best known for its plentiful Mediterranean vegetation as well as clean sea and the mix of old and new architecture.
Long time ago…this small town was developed on the remnant of the Greek city Epidaurum and around the year 228 B.C. was conquered by the Romans and turned into a Roman colony- Epidaurus. Cavtat has one of the first underwater archaeological parks in Croatia.
In Cavtat, you will get closer to miraculous submarine world, a unique world which deserves the right to be protected and further studied.
In Croatia there are eight protected underwater places, and they are called "underwater museums." One of them is close to Cavtat - a ship with a cargo of amphorae from 3rd and 4th century AD. Her length is about 30 feet, and she wore a few thousands of amphorae. This Greek merchant ship lies on the sea bed of the coast of Cavtat.
The vases (amphorae), that were originally contained olive oil and wine, are still tightly packed into the cargo hold as they were centuries ago. This is one of the best preserved forms of an ancient wreck and has a great historical significance!
Its estimated value on the black market is approximately 5 millions £.
In the area of Cavtat were found more remains of sunken ships, so we can rightly say that this area is the No.1 underwater archaeological park in Croatia.
Only one diving center has got a concession from Croatian Ministry of Culture and an exclusive right to take tourists to this amazing “underwater museum” .
